Choosing the right SDK

The table below lists Symbian OS releases and how they've been used in different platforms and  devices.

The device background colour shows compatible devices (devices are compatible if applications from one will work on another without recompilation). Usually compatibility is maintained at the platform level.
For maximum compatibility, the earliest version of a platform should be used (e.g. for compatibility with all Nokia S60 phones use the 1st Edition SDK) - unless functionality specific to a later SDK is required.

Note that the S80 and 9200 platforms are compatible only for non-complex applications.
